Does the United States have the safest food supply in the world? Stephanie Soechtig’s Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food argues that the confident answer Americans have long taken for granted no longer holds. The film opens with the 1993 Jack in the Box outbreak — the E. coli case that killed four children and severely sickened hundreds — and uses it as a doorway into three decades of recurring contamination: spinach, cantaloupe, chicken, even cookie dough labeled “safe to eat.” Through the testimony of grieving families, the work of food safety attorney Bill Marler and researcher Darin Detwiler, and the analysis of policy experts such as Marion Nestle, the documentary builds an indictment not of a single company but of a system — one in which jurisdiction is split between the FDA and USDA, profit too often outweighs caution, and “everyone’s responsibility” quietly becomes no one’s. Compressed into a sharp 83 minutes, it asks whether anything has truly changed in thirty years, and leaves the viewer with an uncomfortable question: what exactly are we trusting when we trust that our food is safe?
