[English] Bob Nixon (Robert Henry Nixon, b. 1954) is an American filmmaker and conservationist known for documentaries about tribal peoples, field biologists, and endangered species. The son of Agnes Nixon — creator of the daytime drama All My Children — he trained as a falconer in England before entering film, producing adventure and environmental documentaries for ABC’s American Sportsman in the 1970s. In 1979 he traveled to Rwanda to film zoologist Dian Fossey; she granted him the rights to her life story on the condition that he devote a year to hands-on conservation. After her murder, that story became Gorillas in the Mist (1988), which Nixon co-produced.

He next wrote, produced, and directed Amazon Diary (1989), nominated for the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film. Across some fifty films — among them The End of the Game, The Lord God Bird, and Mission Blue (2014, co-directed with Fisher Stevens) — his work pairs sync-sound storytelling in extreme locations with striking cinematography. Beyond filmmaking, Nixon founded and leads the Earth Conservation Corps, restoring the polluted Anacostia River in Washington, D.C., work recognized with an Academy Award nomination, multiple Emmy Awards, and a Presidential service honor.
