Mission Blue follows Dr. Sylvia Earle — the legendary oceanographer nicknamed “Her Deepness” — on her urgent campaign to protect the world’s oceans. Part biography, part environmental call to arms, the film traces Earle’s life from a girl who fell in love with the sea in Florida to a pioneering scientist who spent more than 7,000 hours underwater and broke the glass ceiling of a male-dominated field. Drawing on over fifty years of firsthand experience, she testifies to how drastically the ocean has changed — coral reefs bleached, fishing grounds emptied — and lays out her TED Prize wish: to build a global network of “Hope Spots,” marine protected areas that work like underwater national parks. Directed by Bob Nixon and Fisher Stevens, the film refuses to end in despair, holding the reality of destruction and the possibility of recovery in the same frame. Its closing message — “No Blue, No Green. No Oceans, No Us” — distills its argument into a single line: the health of the sea and the survival of humanity are one and the same.
