Cambridge, the 1960s. Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) is a brilliant, slightly aimless cosmology student who falls in love with Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones), a literature student and a devout Christian — a counterpoint to his own atheism. At twenty-one, just as his work begins to take shape, Stephen is diagnosed with motor neurone disease and given two years to live. Jane chooses to marry him and face the illness at his side. The Theory of Everything is not, despite its title, primarily a film about physics. Adapted from Jane Hawking’s memoir, it tells the story from her vantage point: the decades of caregiving, the strain of raising three children while supporting a husband whose body fails as his mind soars, the quiet arrival of other people into both their lives, and a love that changes shape without ever quite disappearing. It is a film about endurance — of the body, of a marriage, of the human spirit — anchored by Redmayne’s Oscar-winning physical transformation and Jones’s restrained, powerful turn as a woman whose devotion has limits she must learn to forgive in herself.
