[English] Phillip Noyce (Phillip Roger Noyce, b. April 29, 1950, Griffith, New South Wales) is an Australian film and television director, producer, and screenwriter, known for a remarkably varied career that moves between Hollywood action-thrillers and socially conscious historical dramas. He grew up in rural New South Wales and later Sydney, became involved in the vibrant Australian independent film scene of the early 1970s, and trained at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. He announced himself with Newsfront (1978), a celebrated drama about newsreel cameramen that won the Australian Film Institute Awards for Best Film and Best Director.

Noyce achieved international attention with the taut sailing thriller Dead Calm (1989), a showcase for a young Nicole Kidman that brought him to Hollywood. Over the following decade he became a leading director of studio thrillers, helming two Jack Ryan adaptations with Harrison Ford — Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994) — as well as Sliver (1993), The Saint (1997), and the serial-killer thriller The Bone Collector (1999), with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie.
