Born in 1990 near Louisville, Kentucky, and raised on a horse farm with two older brothers, Lawrence left school at fourteen to pursue acting in New York. Her breakthrough came in the independent film Winter’s Bone (2010), in which she played a hardened Ozark teenager searching for her father; the role earned her a first Academy Award nomination at twenty.
