[English] George Miller is an Australian director, screenwriter, and producer—a former medical doctor who became one of the great action visionaries of world cinema, and one of its most genre-defying. Born in 1945 in the rural Queensland town of Chinchilla to Greek immigrant parents, he trained in medicine at the University of New South Wales and worked as a physician in a Sydney emergency room—an experience of trauma and the human body that would echo through his films. While in medical school he began making short films with his brother; a workshop prize brought him together with producer Byron Kennedy, and their independently financed Mad Max (1979) became a global sensation. Its sequel Mad Max 2 / The Road Warrior (1981) is often ranked among the greatest action films ever made. What sets Miller apart is his refusal to be typecast: after the Mad Max films he made the dark comedy The Witches of Eastwick (1987), the wrenching medical drama Lorenzo’s Oil (1992, his first Oscar nomination), the beloved family films Babe (1995, which he co-wrote and produced) and Babe: Pig in the City (1998), and the animated musical Happy Feet (2006), which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Then, at seventy, he returned to the wasteland with Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)—a film that won six Oscars, earned him a Best Director nomination, and was hailed as a modern action masterpiece—followed by the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) and the fantasy Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022).
