Introduction
The Wound That War Leaves on a Single Body — A Story of Dignity Reclaimed
June 19 is the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.
The day exists to illuminate the reality that sexual violence has been used as an organized tactic in war and armed conflict, and to call for its elimination and support for those who have survived it. Sexual violence in conflict targets not only women but men and children; it continues to occur in conflict zones around the world. For too long it was dismissed as a byproduct of war, with survivors forced into silence. The international community has increasingly come to name it for what it is: a clear crime against humanity, not a matter of honor but of human rights. This day calls for two things: building societies in which survivors can speak, and holding perpetrators accountable.
For this day, the film to watch is Butterfly Vision (Бачення метелика, 2022), the feature debut of Ukrainian director Maksym Nakonechnyi.
Set against the backdrop of the Donbas conflict in eastern Ukraine, the film follows Lilia, a female soldier who has been held captive and, after her release, returns to her home and her civilian life carrying what was done to her in captivity. The film is not about the combat itself. It is about what war inscribes on a single person’s body and mind, and about one woman’s quiet, tenacious effort to reclaim her own body and dignity.

Synopsis: Lilia is released in a prisoner exchange and returns home to her husband Serhiy and their life in Mariupol. She carries what happened to her in captivity — including a pregnancy she did not choose. What confronts her at home is not only her own trauma but the expectations, pity, and helplessness of the people who love her. The film follows the gap between what Lilia needs and what the people around her are able to give her: a husband who wants to protect her in ways she has not asked for, a society that has no language for what she has experienced, and Lilia herself, who must find her own terms on which to live with what has been done to her.
Background Knowledge
Nakonechnyi and the Donbas Conflict
Director Nakonechnyi was born in Kyiv and trained at the Kyiv State Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinema. This is his debut feature, developed over several years during the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. The film is rooted in the specific historical reality of that conflict — a war that began in 2014 and in which sexual violence against captives has been documented by human rights organizations. The decision to begin the film at the moment of release, rather than depicting captivity itself, reflects a careful artistic choice: the film is not interested in depicting the violence itself, but in following the life that must be rebuilt in its aftermath.
The Cannes Selection and Recognition
The film was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize (the International Federation of Film Critics award for the section). This recognition brought the film significant international attention at a moment when awareness of the Ukrainian conflict had intensified globally following the full-scale invasion of February 2022.
The Title’s Meaning
The Ukrainian title Бачення метелика means “butterfly vision.” The phrase refers to the psychological phenomenon in which a traumatized person perceives their surroundings as through a fractured lens — hypervigilant to threat, unable to settle in safety, seeing what is not there while failing to see what is. It describes both the sensory and psychological state of someone living in the aftermath of severe trauma. The title is also a quiet invocation of transformation: the butterfly is the thing that comes through the process of containment.
What Makes It Exceptional
A Film That Begins Where Other Films End
Most films about wartime sexual violence, when they engage with the subject at all, locate it as a dramatic revelation or climax. Butterfly Vision begins after. Its subject is not the commission of violence but the life that must be lived in its aftermath — the quiet, grinding, ordinary difficulty of returning to civilian existence while carrying something that civilian existence has no framework for.
This is a rarer and more difficult thing to depict, and the film does it with sustained patience and restraint. There are no scenes designed to generate pity. The camera stays close to Lilia and watches what she does, without directing the audience toward a predetermined response.
The Performance at the Film’s Center
The actress playing Lilia — Rita Burkovska — carries the film entirely. The film requires her to communicate, across its entire length, the interior state of someone who cannot fully communicate what she is experiencing to the people around her. The distance between what Lilia knows and what she can say is the film’s primary subject, and Burkovska renders it through physical presence and silence rather than through disclosure. The performance has been described by critics as one of the significant screen performances of recent European cinema.
The Refusal of Resolution
The film does not end with healing or reconciliation in the conventional sense. It ends with Lilia having claimed something — a decision, a direction, a way of holding herself in relation to what happened — that is entirely her own. This refusal of the comforting arc is the film’s greatest honesty. Recovery from severe trauma is not a narrative with a clean resolution, and a film that depicted it as such would be dishonest to its subject.

(International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict)」です。
