[English] Edward Zwick (b. October 8, 1952, Chicago, Illinois) is an American director, producer, and screenwriter known for sweeping historical epics and character-driven dramas that pair large-scale spectacle with social and moral seriousness. He studied literature at Harvard University and earned an MFA from the AFI Conservatory. Early in his career he moved into television, and with his longtime creative partner Marshall Herskovitz co-created the acclaimed, influential series Thirtysomething, later followed by My So-Called Life and Once and Again, through their company Bedford Falls.

Zwick made his feature directing debut with the romantic comedy About Last Night (1986), but his breakthrough came with Glory (1989), the Civil War drama about the all-Black 54th Massachusetts regiment, which won three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Denzel Washington. It began a recurring set of concerns in his work — history, honor, race, and men tested in extremity — that he returned to across Legends of the Fall (1994), Courage Under Fire (1996), The Siege (1998), and especially the epic The Last Samurai (2003), starring Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe, and Blood Diamond (2006), with Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou.
