Queen of Katwe tells the inspiring true story of Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga), a young girl growing up in the impoverished slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda. Having lost her father, Phiona helps her fiercely determined mother, Harriet (Lupita Nyong’o), scrape together a living selling maize in the market, with little hope of a future beyond the streets. Everything changes when she follows her brother to a local mission and meets Robert Katende (David Oyelowo), a kind and dedicated coach who teaches chess to the children of Katwe as a way to give them hope. Discovering a prodigious natural talent, Phiona rises with astonishing speed — from the dusty chess club to becoming, at age fourteen, one of Uganda’s national representatives and a competitor on the world stage. But success brings its own trials, as Phiona must reconcile her growing dreams with the poverty she comes from and the family she loves. Directed by Mira Nair and adapted from Tim Crothers’s book, Queen of Katwe is a warm, vibrant, and deeply moving celebration of talent, dignity, and the power of believing in a dream against overwhelming odds.

Queen of Katwe is based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi and her coach Robert Katende, first told in an ESPN Magazine article and subsequent book by Tim Crothers. Director Mira Nair — who has long kept a home in Kampala, Uganda — was drawn to the project after making a documentary connected to Katende’s work, and was determined to portray the community with authenticity and dignity rather than as a backdrop of misery. The film was shot on location in Uganda (including in Katwe itself) and in South Africa. Madina Nalwanga, cast in the lead role of Phiona, was herself a young dancer from a background not unlike the character’s, making her feature film debut. Both Lupita Nyong’o — a recent Academy Award winner for 12 Years a Slave — and David Oyelowo were Nair’s first choices for their roles.
