A Moving True Story of a Girl from the Slums Who Grasps Her Dream Through Chess, Depicting the Power of Education and the Flowering of Talent
July 25 is the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent.
This international day was established by a UN General Assembly resolution (A/RES/78/323) in August 2024 and was first observed on July 25, 2025. The date of July 25 itself inherits a history of being commemorated since 1992 in the Latin American and Caribbean region as the “Day of Afro-Descendant Women.” This international day aims at the eradication of the compound discrimination faced by women and girls of African descent (the intersection of racial discrimination and gender discrimination), the raising of their social status, and the promotion of their full participation in the political, economic, and cultural spheres. Women of African descent have historically continued to be affected by slavery, colonialism, and structural racism, and even today face various challenges such as inequality of educational opportunity, employment discrimination, insufficient political representation, and health disparities; at the same time, they demonstrate outstanding talent in many fields including art, music, literature, science, and politics, and have become a driving force of social transformation.
For this important observance, we recommend Mira Nair’s 2016 film Queen of Katwe. Background Knowledge
A Moving Story Based on a True Account
Queen of Katwe is a true story based on the book of the same name written in 2012 by journalist Tim Crothers, The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster. Crothers had originally introduced Phiona’s story to the world in the 2011 ESPN article “Game of Her Life.” The protagonist, Phiona Mutesi, is a real person, a player who has inscribed her name in the chess history of Uganda.
Phiona Mutesi’s Actual Career
The real Phiona Mutesi was born on March 28, 1996, in Kampala, Uganda. She lost her father in early childhood and, because of her family’s financial hardship, left school around the age of nine. While supporting her family by selling maize in the market, the turning point came when she followed her younger brother into the chess program of the Sports Outreach Institute. Her instructor was Robert Katende.
In 2007 and 2008 she won the Uganda women’s junior chess championship. In 2010 she competed as a representative of Uganda in the 39th Chess Olympiad held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. In 2012 she competed in the 40th Chess Olympiad held in Istanbul, Turkey, and through her results at that event earned the title of Woman Candidate Master. With this, Phiona and Ivy Amoko became Uganda’s first titled women players. She went on to participate in multiple Olympiads as a representative of Uganda, in 2014, 2016, and 2018.
Alongside chess, Phiona placed importance on education. In 2017 she received a scholarship and entered Northwest University in the state of Washington in the United States, graduating in May 2021 with a degree in Business Administration and Management. She has since built a business career at companies such as Microsoft and Deloitte.
The Actual Activities of Coach Robert Katende
The real Robert Katende is a former soccer player and an educator holding a degree in engineering. He launched a chess program in the slums, beginning to teach chess to the children of Katwe as a volunteer with the nonprofit organization the Sports Outreach Institute. From the “Katwe Pioneers” he coached, many excellent chess players besides Phiona have emerged.
Katende continues his work spreading chess in Uganda today, pouring his passion into providing educational opportunities to children in impoverished areas. His devoted work proves that a single educator can change the lives of many children.
The Current State of the Katwe District of Uganda
Katwe is one of the largest slums in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. It is characterized by poor living conditions, unsanitary water, limited electricity supply, and extreme poverty. Many households live in a state of hardship, and many of the children are unable to attend school.
However, through this film’s success, the Katwe chess program drew international attention, and greater support came to be offered.
Director Mira Nair’s Feelings
The Indian-born film director Mira Nair had been based in Uganda since the early 1990s and understood the culture and people of this region deeply. She has spoken of her attachment to stories of people who create something out of what looks like nothing.
Nair described this film as a challenging work for Disney in many respects, and said it was a story in which beauty and harsh reality stand side by side. Through her delicate direction, it became a work that depicts the harsh reality of the slums while never losing hope or human dignity.
The Discovery of Star Madina Nalwanga
Madina Nalwanga, who plays Phiona, was a Ugandan girl chosen from among many audition candidates (born in 2002, she was in her early teens at the time of filming). She was discovered at a community dance class and had almost no acting experience, but director Nair saw a special radiance in her.
Before filming, Nair set up acting workshops for the child actors, having them learn to perform in front of the camera. Nalwanga’s natural, powerful performance was highly praised by many critics, and she won the award for Most Promising Actor at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
What Makes It Exceptional
Lupita Nyong’o’s Profound Performance as the Mother
Harriet, the mother played by Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, is the heart of this film. Nyong’o plays with deep humanity the figure of a mother who protects her children while fighting poverty, at times strict, at times gentle, always living strongly.
Especially striking is the scene in which she goes to sell a keepsake dress for her daughter’s education. Her figure, protecting her dignity to the end even while facing temptation, symbolizes the strength and sacrifice of African mothers. Nyong’o has said she decided to take the role after reading only the first few pages of the screenplay, stating that she was strongly moved by this story.
David Oyelowo’s Warmth in the Role of the Mentor
Coach Katende, played by David Oyelowo, embodies the figure of the ideal educator. Prioritizing the children’s future over his own career, finding talent, encouraging it, and never giving up — his figure shows the essence of education.
Oyelowo regarded this film as a work of significance and decided to appear in it as a challenge to the lack of diversity in contemporary American cinema. His warm, powerful performance convincingly expresses that a single educator can change many lives.
Madina Nalwanga’s Pure and Powerful Performance
Madina Nalwanga, in her film debut, plays Phiona’s purity, curiosity, growth, setbacks, and recovery with astonishing naturalness. Because she herself is from Uganda, her understanding of and empathy for the character run deep, and through her performance viewers can directly feel the movements of Phiona’s heart.
In particular, her expressions in the scenes of her joy at winning at chess for the first time, her despair at losing at a world tournament, and her resolve to rise again convey a powerful message that goes beyond words.
