Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution tells the remarkable, largely untold story of how a scrappy summer camp helped spark a national movement. In the early 1970s, in the Catskill Mountains of New York, Camp Jened offered teenagers with disabilities something the outside world rarely did: a place of freedom, acceptance, and full inclusion, run in the freewheeling spirit of the era just down the road from Woodstock. For the campers — many facing a future otherwise shaped by isolation and institutionalization — Jened was a revelation, a utopia where they could simply be themselves. The bonds forged there endured, and as many of the campers migrated west to Berkeley, California, they discovered that the sense of possibility they had found at camp could be turned into political power. The film follows these friends — among them the pioneering activist Judy Heumann — as they move from summer camp to the front lines of the disability rights struggle, through landmark protests and ultimately toward the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Co-directed by Nicole Newnham and former Jened camper James LeBrecht, and executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, Crip Camp is a joyful, moving, and revelatory portrait of a community that changed the world.

Crip Camp grew out of co-director James LeBrecht’s own experience: a sound designer and mixer born with spina bifida, he had attended Camp Jened in the early 1970s and long felt that the story behind the camp — and the movement it helped inspire — deserved to be told. He proposed the idea to his longtime collaborator, director Nicole Newnham. The film draws heavily on remarkable archival footage of the camp shot in the early 1970s, interwoven with present-day interviews with former campers, many of whom became leaders of the disability rights movement, including activist Judy Heumann.
