Introduction

A Record of Those Who Risked Their Lives Amid War and Vested Interests to Protect the World’s Last Mountain Gorillas

July 31 is World Ranger Day. Commemorating the founding of the International Ranger Federation (IRF) on July 31, 1992, the first was held in 2007 (its 15th anniversary). This observance, championed chiefly by the International Ranger Federation and the Thin Green Line Foundation, has two purposes. One is to honor the daily work of the rangers who protect the world’s natural and cultural heritage. The other is to mourn the rangers who have lost their lives, or been injured, in the line of duty.

The profession of ranger stands closer to danger than we tend to think. Standing on the front lines with limited equipment against poachers, armed groups, and harsh nature, more than 100 of them are said to lose their lives each year. This day is also a day to shine a light on that quiet sacrifice.

For this day of commemoration, we strongly recommend Orlando von Einsiedel’s 2014 documentary Virunga. Set in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this work records the figures of the rangers who put their bodies on the line, amid civil war and oil interests, to protect the few mountain gorillas remaining in the world and Africa’s oldest national park. Leonardo DiCaprio is credited as an executive producer; distributed on Netflix, it reached audiences worldwide and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

To watch this film on the day that mourns fallen rangers thrusts before us, quietly but sharply, just how vivid the sacrifice behind the words “to protect nature” can be.

Background Knowledge

Virunga National Park and the Mountain Gorilla

Virunga National Park, established in 1925 in the era of the Belgian Congo, is the oldest national park on the African continent. A vast park encompassing everything from 5,000-metre-class volcanoes to tropical rainforest and lakes, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for its outstanding biodiversity.

The presence that symbolizes the park above all is the mountain gorilla. Mountain gorillas live in only a very few, limited regions of the world, and their extinction was strongly feared throughout the twentieth century. Although in recent years their numbers have been gradually recovering through the results of conservation work, it remains the case that they are still in a precarious situation. For those precious gorillas, Virunga is one of the last strongholds.

The Background of Conflict in Eastern Congo

Indispensable to understanding this film is the history of conflict in which eastern Congo has been placed. After the 1994 genocide in neighbouring Rwanda, an immense number of people — including perpetrators — and armed groups crossed the border into eastern Congo, and this region fell into a long chain of instability and violence. With vested interests over abundant mineral resources also entangled, and numerous armed groups proliferating, Virunga National Park has repeatedly become part of that battlefield.

The “M23” that appears in the film is an armed group that rose in 2012 and became a great threat, at one point seizing Goma, a key city in the east. The park became a base and a passageway for such forces, and the rangers, though officers of nature conservation, were in effect placed on the front line of the conflict.

On the Oil Company SOCO International

Another theme of this film is the problem of oil exploration within the park by the British oil company SOCO International. Under a contract with the Congolese government, the company was pushing exploration across a zone that included a considerable area of the park. Resource development in Virunga — a World Heritage Site and a national park — was something that could shake the very existence of the park.

What the film recorded is the struggle between the people who confront this development by means of the law, and the forces that try to obstruct them. After the work’s release, international criticism and pressure mounted, and SOCO ultimately withdrew from operations in Virunga. This film is often spoken of as a rare example in which a single documentary moved the real conduct of a corporation.

Director Orlando von Einsiedel and the Making of the Film

Director Orlando von Einsiedel is a British filmmaker who originally came to visual production from a career as a professional snowboarder. He first visited this land intending to film Virunga’s rangers as a positive story symbolizing recovery from a long war. But during his stay the M23 rebellion and the problem over oil surfaced, and the work changed into a tense record fusing investigative reporting and human documentary.

By being distributed on Netflix, this film reached viewers around the world, and it also drew attention for having the actor Leonardo DiCaprio credited as an executive producer. It is said that DiCaprio, having watched the finished work, contacted the production team himself and supported its dissemination.

What Makes It Exceptional

The Vividness of a Record Filmed at the Risk of Life

The greatest value of this film lies in the fact that all of it is a record of events that actually happened, and moreover that much of it was filmed amid extreme danger. Actual combat, actual gunfire, actual evacuation. The camera captures, just as it is, a tension and terror that could never be created by staging. Scenes that would be prepared as a scripted “climax” in a drama here all occur as inescapable reality. This vividness overwhelms the viewer.

The Depth of the Four Portraits

Though a single documentary, this film carefully deepens the inner life of each of its four central figures. De Merode, who cast off an aristocratic origin to place himself in a dangerous land. Rodrigue, who carries a past as a child soldier and now protects the park. Bauma, who cherishes the gorillas like his own children. And Mélanie, the journalist pursuing the truth. By depicting these people of differing positions and backgrounds, each remaining in this land for their own reasons, the work opens onto the universal question of why a person would protect something even at the risk of their life.

Its Strength as Investigative Reporting

This film is a moving human documentary and, at the same time, excellent investigative reporting. Through hidden-camera records, it makes visible the structure of wrongdoing surrounding oil interests, thrusting the abstract question of “the rights and wrongs of development” into the concrete words and deeds of actual human beings. Though a work of beautiful imagery and quiet narration, at its core runs the sharpness of a journalism that cuts into power and capital. This reconciliation of the two qualities is precisely what sets this film apart.
