Introduction: The Big Cat at the Edge of Survival

[English]

Every year on July 29, International Tiger Day turns the world’s attention to the largest of all big cats—and to how close we came to losing it. Over the past century, wild tiger numbers collapsed by roughly 95%, falling from an estimated 100,000 to a historic low of around 3,200 by 2010. A century of hunting, habitat loss, and the illegal trade in tiger parts had pushed one of nature’s most powerful predators toward extinction. Yet this day is not only a warning; it is also one of conservation’s rare hopeful stories. Since that low point, coordinated international effort has begun to turn the numbers around, with recent estimates placing the wild population at roughly 5,500. International Tiger Day exists to keep that fragile recovery from slipping backward—celebrating the tiger while reminding us how much deliberate work its survival still demands.

Origins: The St. Petersburg Tiger Summit

[English]

International Tiger Day was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia, convened as tiger numbers reached their all-time low. Leaders and representatives from the 13 tiger-range countries—including India, Russia, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia—gathered to confront the species’ collapse. The summit produced the St. Petersburg Declaration, adopted in November 2010, and launched the ambitious TX2 goal: to double the number of wild tigers by 2022, the next Chinese Year of the Tiger. Backed by the Global Tiger Recovery Program and international pledges, the countries committed to restoring habitats, cracking down on poaching, and banning the illegal trade in tiger parts. July 29 was designated as the annual day to keep this shared goal in the public eye year after year.

The TX2 Goal and Its Results

[English]

TX2 was one of the most ambitious species-recovery targets ever set, and its results have been genuinely encouraging—if uneven. From the 2010 baseline of around 3,200, the global wild tiger population has climbed to roughly 5,500 in recent estimates, a substantial rebound driven above all by South Asia. India, home to the majority of the world’s wild tigers through its long-running Project Tiger, has been central to the recovery, alongside gains in Nepal, Bhutan, and Russia. But the picture is not uniformly bright: in parts of Southeast Asia—countries such as Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam—tigers have effectively disappeared from the wild. The lesson of TX2 is twofold: sustained, well-funded conservation genuinely works, yet the tiger’s overall status remains Endangered, and gains in one region cannot be assumed to hold everywhere.

Why It Matters: An Umbrella Over the Forest

[English]

The tiger’s importance reaches far beyond its own survival. As an apex predator, the tiger regulates the populations of the deer, wild boar, and other herbivores it hunts, keeping those numbers in balance and protecting the vegetation and forest health that countless other species depend on. Conservationists often call the tiger an “umbrella species”: protecting the large, intact landscapes a tiger needs to roam automatically shelters everything else living beneath that umbrella—smaller animals, plants, watersheds, and the forests that store carbon and supply water to human communities downstream. To save the tiger, in other words, is to save whole ecosystems. That is why International Tiger Day frames the animal not as a single charismatic species to be admired from afar, but as a keystone whose fate is bound up with the health of Asia’s forests and the people who live alongside them.
