Dreamgirls is a lavish, powerhouse musical charting the rise and fall of a Black girl group against the backdrop of the American music industry of the 1960s and 1970s. In Detroit in 1962, three young women — the soulful, big-voiced Effie White (Jennifer Hudson), the glamorous Deena Jones (Beyoncé Knowles), and Lorrell Robinson (Anika Noni Rose) — form a singing trio called the Dreamettes. They are discovered by ambitious car salesman turned manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), who first makes them backup singers for the flamboyant R&B star Jimmy “Thunder” Early (Eddie Murphy), then engineers their transformation into the crossover-pop supergroup the Dreams. But as Curtis reshapes the group to reach white audiences — pushing the more marketable Deena to the front and the powerhouse Effie aside — success brings betrayal, heartbreak, and painful compromise, exposing the ruthless machinery behind the glamour. Written and directed by Bill Condon and adapted from the Tony-winning Broadway musical, and loosely inspired by the story of Motown and the Supremes, Dreamgirls is a glittering, emotionally explosive show-business saga carried by unforgettable songs — above all Jennifer Hudson’s shattering “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

Critics singled out Bill Condon’s confident direction, the film’s sumptuous costume and production design, its energetic staging of Henry Krieger’s songs, and above all the performances — Eddie Murphy’s career-best dramatic turn as Jimmy Early, and especially Jennifer Hudson’s astonishing feature debut as Effie White, whose rendition of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” became an instant showstopper and the emotional heart of the film. Hudson, a former American Idol contestant, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in her very first film role, in one of the most celebrated debuts in recent memory. Dreamgirls is adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical by composer Henry Krieger and writer-lyricist Tom Eyen, which won six Tony Awards and was directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett, to whom the film is dedicated. The story is widely understood to be loosely inspired by the history of Motown Records and the Supremes — including the rise of Diana Ross and the sidelining of original lead singer Florence Ballard — though the names and details are fictionalized. Writer-director Bill Condon, who had written the Oscar-winning screen musical Chicago, cast pop superstar Beyoncé Knowles as Deena and, in a breakthrough, the then-unknown Jennifer Hudson as Effie after an extensive search of more than 780 auditioners. To reflect a contemporary R&B sensibility, the production team reworked Krieger and Eyen’s score with new arrangements and added several new songs.
