Il Postino (The Postman) is a tender, gently funny, and quietly profound drama about poetry, friendship, and the awakening of a soul. On a small, sun-drenched island off the coast of Italy in the 1950s, Mario Ruoppolo (Massimo Troisi), a shy and unschooled fisherman’s son who has no wish to fish, takes a temporary job as a postman. He has only one customer: the celebrated Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret), who has been exiled to the island for his politics and whose home receives a daily flood of letters, many from admiring women. As Mario bicycles the mail up to the poet’s door each day, a shy, unlikely friendship blossoms between the humble young man and the great artist. Neruda opens Mario’s eyes to the beauty of metaphor and the power of poetry — a gift Mario longs to use to win the heart of the beautiful Beatrice (Maria Grazia Cucinotta), the woman he loves. But as poetry awakens something deeper in him, Mario begins to see his island, his world, and himself in an entirely new light. Il Postino was the passion project of its star, the beloved Neapolitan comic actor, writer, and director Massimo Troisi. After being deeply moved by Antonio Skármeta’s novel Ardiente paciencia (Burning Patience), Troisi acquired the film rights, co-wrote the screenplay, and brought the project to director Michael Radford — relocating the story from Skármeta’s 1970s Chile to 1950s Italy and reimagining its protagonist as a shy island postman. Troisi had suffered from a serious heart condition since a childhood bout of rheumatic fever, and doctors urged him to undergo a heart transplant before filming; he chose instead to postpone surgery and complete the film he cared so deeply about, often able to work only an hour or two a day, with a body double stepping in for some physically demanding shots. Just twelve hours after principal photography was completed, Massimo Troisi died of a heart attack, at the age of 41, without ever seeing the finished film. The role of Neruda was played by the great French actor Philippe Noiret (Cinema Paradiso).
