[English] James Horner (James Roy Horner, August 14, 1953 – June 22, 2015) was an American film composer, conductor, and orchestrator, one of the most successful and beloved film composers of his era, celebrated for his lush, sweeping, deeply emotional orchestral scores. Over a career of nearly forty years he scored more than 100 films, known for integrating choral and electronic textures with traditional orchestration and for his recurring use of Celtic-inflected melodies and folk instruments. Born in Los Angeles, he spent part of his childhood in London and studied music at the Royal College of Music there, before returning to California to earn degrees at the University of Southern California and UCLA.

Horner began his career scoring student films and low-budget features for Roger Corman’s New World Pictures, and achieved his first major breakthrough with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), which established him as a rising mainstream composer. He earned his first Academy Award nominations in 1986, for the score of Aliens and the song “Somewhere Out There” from An American Tail. Through the following decade he became one of Hollywood’s most in-demand composers, with acclaimed scores for Cocoon (1985), Willow (1988), Glory (1989) — for which he won a Grammy Award — Field of Dreams (1989), Legends of the Fall (1994), Apollo 13 (1995), and Braveheart (1995).
