[English] Niels Arestrup (February 8, 1949 – December 1, 2024) was a French-Danish actor, theatre director, and screenwriter, one of the most respected and commanding performers in French cinema, celebrated for his imposing presence and his mastery of complex, authoritative, often menacing men who seem to hold great violence or feeling in check beneath a still surface. Born in Montreuil, near Paris, to a Danish father and a Breton mother, he came to acting after leaving school, training under the noted teacher Tania Balachova. The theatre was his first and enduring love, and he built a long and distinguished stage career in parallel with his film work, across more than five decades.

Arestrup worked steadily in French cinema and television from the 1970s, but achieved his greatest screen recognition through his powerful collaborations with director Jacques Audiard. He won the César Award for Best Supporting Actor for Audiard’s The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005), and again, unforgettably, as the ruthless Corsican prison boss César Luciani in A Prophet (2009), a performance widely regarded as one of the finest of its kind. He won a third Best Supporting Actor César for the political comedy The French Minister (Quai d’Orsay, 2013), making him the only actor ever to win three Césars in that category.

English-speaking audiences came to know Arestrup through Steven Spielberg’s War Horse (2011), in which he played, against type, a gentle French grandfather, and through Julian Schnabel’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) and At Eternity’s Gate (2018). One of his most celebrated later roles was General Dietrich von Choltitz in Volker Schlöndorff’s Diplomacy (2014), reprising a part he had performed more than two hundred times on the Paris stage opposite André Dussollier. A revered stage actor to the end, he won the Molière Award for Best Actor in 2019 for the play Red, in which he played the painter Mark Rothko. Named an Officier of the Legion of Honour, Arestrup died in 2024 at the age of 75, remembered as one of France’s greatest actors.
