Synopsis /
English (Short Synopsis)
Diplomatie (Diplomacy) is a taut, gripping historical two-hander about the night one man’s words may have saved one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It is the early hours of August 25, 1944. As Allied forces close in on occupied Paris, the German military governor of the city, General Dietrich von Choltitz (Niels Arestrup), sits in his suite at the luxurious Hôtel Meurice, preparing to carry out Adolf Hitler’s direct order: to reduce Paris to rubble, detonating explosives already laid beneath its bridges, its monuments, and the Louvre. Into his room, through a hidden passage, slips Raoul Nordling (André Dussollier), the Swedish consul general — a man who loves Paris and is determined to stop the unthinkable. What follows is a long, tense, brilliant duel of words, as the diplomat deploys every tool of persuasion — reason, flattery, moral argument, and cunning — to change the mind of a soldier bound by duty, fear, and the threat hanging over his own family. Directed by the great German filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff and adapted from Cyril Gély’s acclaimed play, Diplomatie is a masterclass in dialogue and performance — a suspenseful chamber piece about persuasion, conscience, and the fragile survival of beauty in the face of destruction.

Critical Reception / 批評
Diplomatie was warmly received by critics, praised as an intelligent, superbly acted, and quietly gripping historical drama. Reviewers highlighted the extraordinary two-man performances of André Dussollier and Niels Arestrup — who had already played these roles more than two hundred times on the Paris stage — and the way Volker Schlöndorff opens up a fundamentally theatrical, single-room premise into a tense, cinematic race against time. The film was admired for its literate, gripping screenplay, its restraint, and its focus on the power of language and persuasion rather than spectacle. Critics noted that the pivotal confrontation is substantially dramatized — the real Nordling and von Choltitz met several times, chiefly to negotiate a truce and the release of prisoners, and historians continue to debate exactly why Paris was spared — but praised the film as a compelling meditation on conscience and civilization. The New York Review of Books called it “a love story about Paris.”

Production Note /
Diplomatie is adapted from the 2011 stage play of the same name by French playwright Cyril Gély, which premiered at the Théâtre de la Madeleine in Paris. Remarkably, both of the film’s leads — André Dussollier as Nordling and Niels Arestrup as von Choltitz — reprised the roles they had already performed more than two hundred times on stage, bringing a deeply lived-in intimacy to their confrontation. The film was directed by Volker Schlöndorff, one of the leading figures of the New German Cinema, whose adaptation of Günter Grass’s The Tin Drum won both the Palme d’Or at Cannes (1979) and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (1980). The story is a dramatized “what if,” extrapolated from real history: General Dietrich von Choltitz did receive orders to destroy Paris and did not carry them out, and the city’s survival — whether through Nordling’s persuasion, von Choltitz’s own calculation, or the pace of the Allied advance — remains a subject of historical discussion. The film was largely shot at the Hôtel Meurice, the real location of von Choltitz’s headquarters, and the same building where the historical events unfolded. The earlier fate of occupied Paris had also been dramatized in René Clément’s Is Paris Burning? (1966).
