[English] Jack O’Connell (b. August 1, 1990, Derby, England) is an English actor known for the raw intensity and physical commitment he brings to gritty, character-driven roles. Raised in a working-class family in Alvaston, Derbyshire — with Irish heritage on his father’s side — he originally dreamed of becoming a footballer before turning to acting. He began appearing in British television and film in his mid-teens, with early roles in This Is England (2006) and the horror film Eden Lake (2008).

O’Connell first gained wide recognition playing the volatile James Cook in the British teen drama Skins (2009–2010, 2013). He then delivered a pair of breakout performances in independent film: as a violent young offender in the prison drama Starred Up (2013), and as a British soldier stranded behind enemy lines in Belfast in ’71 (2014), earning British Independent Film Award nominations for both.
