[English] Sir Alan Parker (February 14, 1944 – July 31, 2020) was a British director, screenwriter, and producer, celebrated for a remarkably eclectic body of work that ranged across musicals, true-story dramas, thrillers, and family films. Born into a working-class family in Islington, London, Parker began his career in advertising as a copywriter, becoming a successful director of television commercials — part of an influential generation of British ad-world filmmakers that also included Ridley Scott, Adrian Lyne, and Hugh Hudson. He moved into television drama, winning an international Emmy for The Evacuees (1975), before turning to feature films.

Parker made a striking feature debut with Bugsy Malone (1976), an audacious gangster musical performed entirely by children, which helped launch the careers of Jodie Foster and Scott Baio. He followed it with the harrowing Turkish-prison drama Midnight Express (1978), a major critical and commercial success that earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director. Over the next two decades, Parker deliberately refused to be typecast, moving restlessly between genres: the performing-arts musical Fame (1980), the intimate divorce drama Shoot the Moon (1982), the rock opera Pink Floyd – The Wall (1982), the war-and-friendship story Birdy (1984), and the occult thriller Angel Heart (1987).

Parker was famous for refusing to repeat himself, hopping between musicals, true-crime dramas, thrillers, and family films — “I like to do different things each time,” he said — and became one of the few directors equally fluent in the film musical and in hard-edged social realism.
