Mississippi Burning is a tense, fact-inspired drama set during the “Freedom Summer” of 1964, when three young civil rights workers — two white, one Black — vanish one night on a rural road in Jessup County, Mississippi, after being pulled over. As the case draws national attention, the FBI dispatches two agents whose clashing methods drive the film: Alan Ward (Willem Dafoe), a young, by-the-book Northerner committed to procedure, and Rupert Anderson (Gene Hackman), a former small-town Mississippi sheriff who understands the coded rhythms — and the violence — of the segregated South from the inside. As they investigate a town where local law enforcement is entangled with the Ku Klux Klan, the agents meet a wall of silence, intimidation, and escalating terror against the Black community, while a key crack appears in the form of a deputy’s quietly conflicted wife (Frances McDormand). Mississippi Burning was inspired by the real 1964 murders of civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, who were killed in Neshoba County, Mississippi, during “Freedom Summer” — a campaign to register Black voters — in a crime involving members of the Ku Klux Klan and local law enforcement. Screenwriter Chris Gerolmo drew on the subsequent FBI investigation (code-named “MIBURN,” for “Mississippi Burning”), and director Alan Parker made numerous changes for dramatic effect, foregrounding the two fictionalized FBI agents. The filmmakers openly acknowledged that the film was a dramatization rather than a documentary account.
