Almost Famous is Cameron Crowe’s warm, semi-autobiographical love letter to rock and roll, family, and the bittersweet end of innocence. Set in 1973, it follows William Miller (Patrick Fugit), a bright, sheltered fifteen-year-old raised by his loving but strict, disapproving mother (Frances McDormand). A passionate music fan, William talks his way into writing about rock, and his talent lands him an improbable assignment from Rolling Stone magazine: to go on the road with Stillwater, an up-and-coming band on the verge of stardom, and write their story. Out on tour, the wide-eyed William is pulled into the band’s orbit — especially that of its charismatic, elusive guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) — and into the world of the “Band-Aids,” led by the radiant, enigmatic Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), with whom he falls quietly, achingly in love. As he trades objectivity for belonging, William drinks in the exhilaration, heartbreak, and disillusionment of life on the road, learning hard lessons about honesty, loyalty, and the people we hold onto. Almost Famous is closely based on writer-director Cameron Crowe’s own youth: as a teenager in the early 1970s, he became a writer for Rolling Stone, touring with and profiling major rock bands while still in his mid-teens. The film’s mentor figure, Lester Bangs, was a real and legendary rock critic who advised the young Crowe. While the bands referenced are real, the central band Stillwater is fictional, a composite inspired by acts such as the Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, and the Eagles. The film’s music was overseen by Nancy Wilson of the band Heart — Crowe’s wife at the time — and securing the rights to iconic ’70s songs, including from Led Zeppelin, was central to the production. Russell’s famous line “I am a golden god!” echoes a phrase Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin reportedly shouted from a Los Angeles hotel balcony. A longer version, the “Untitled” / Bootleg Cut, running about 39 minutes longer, was later released on home video.
