June 16, 1978, Barcelona) is a German-Spanish actor known for his versatility, intelligence, and remarkable multilingualism across European and Hollywood cinema. Born in Barcelona to a German television director, Hanno Brühl, and a Spanish teacher, he was raised in Cologne, Germany, and grew up fluent in German and Spanish — and later in English, French, Catalan, and Portuguese, an unusually broad range that has allowed him to work across national cinemas with ease. He began acting as a teenager in German radio, television, and the soap opera Forbidden Love (Verbotene Liebe).

Brühl won his first German Film Award for Best Actor for a trio of early performances, then achieved his breakthrough starring as Alex Kerner — the son who conceals the fall of East Germany from his ailing mother — in the international hit Good Bye, Lenin! (2003), which brought him both the German and European Film Awards for Best Actor and made him a star of European cinema. He first reached mainstream international audiences with a small role in The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), then made a major impression as the German war hero and would-be suitor Fredrick Zoller in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (2009).
