Good Bye, Lenin! is a warm, bittersweet tragicomedy set against the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of East Germany. In East Berlin in 1989, Alex Kerner (Daniel Brühl) lives with his mother, Christiane (Katrin Sass), a devoted socialist and pillar of her community who has thrown herself into the cause of the German Democratic Republic since her husband defected to the West years earlier. One night, Christiane suffers a heart attack and collapses into a coma after witnessing Alex being arrested at an anti-government demonstration. She sleeps through the most momentous months in modern German history — the fall of the Wall, the end of the GDR, and the rush of Western capitalism into the East. When she awakens eight months later, doctors warn Alex that any severe shock could kill her. So the devoted son embarks on an elaborate, increasingly absurd deception: to protect his fragile mother, he rebuilds the vanished world of East Germany within their apartment — hunting down discontinued groceries, restaging old décor, and even producing fake newscasts — to convince her that nothing has changed, and that socialism lives on. Directed by Wolfgang Becker and featuring a delicate score by Yann Tiersen (Amélie), Good Bye, Lenin! is a funny, touching, and quietly profound film about love, family, memory, and the tender lies we tell to protect the people we love.

Good Bye, Lenin! was made by the Berlin-based independent company X-Filme Creative Pool and became a phenomenon in Germany, breaking domestic box-office records and drawing millions of viewers. The film gave its central theme a name in the popular imagination — “Ostalgie,” a blend of Ost (East) and Nostalgie (nostalgia). Its production paid careful attention to recreating the material culture of the GDR, from consumer products such as Spreewald pickles to television broadcasts. The film marked the international breakthrough of Daniel Brühl, then in his early twenties, who would go on to a major career in European and Hollywood cinema (Inglourious Basterds, Rush, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War). The score was composed by Yann Tiersen, fresh from the worldwide success of Amélie.
