August 28, 1962, Denver, Colorado) is an American director and producer, one of the most influential and meticulous stylists in modern cinema, known for dark, precise, atmospheric thrillers that probe obsession, violence, and the underside of American life. Raised in Marin County, California — where he grew up near director George Lucas — Fincher was fascinated by filmmaking from childhood. He began his career in visual effects at Industrial Light & Magic, working on films including Return of the Jedi, before becoming one of the defining music-video directors of the 1980s and early 1990s, creating award-winning videos for Madonna, George Michael, and others, and helping found the production company Propaganda Films.

Fincher made his feature debut with Alien 3 (1992), a troubled production he has largely disowned. He rebounded decisively with Se7en (1995), a grim, stylish serial-killer thriller that became a huge hit and a modern classic, and followed it with the twisty thriller The Game (1997) and the provocative, now cult-defining Fight Club (1999).
