April 20, 2010. Mike Williams boards the Deepwater Horizon, joining a crew already 43 days behind schedule. On board, representatives from BP—the rig’s leaseholder—are pushing to bypass safety protocols to accelerate the timeline. Despite facility manager Jimmy Harrell’s warnings regarding a negative pressure test’s anomalous readings, BP officials override his concerns. As the pressure beneath the seafloor surges past the point of containment, the unthinkable happens. At 9:56 p.m., the rig explodes. The film captures the disaster in harrowing real-time: the inferno, the cascading structural failures, and the desperate struggle of the crew to survive a monument of industry turning into a tomb.
