[English] Peter Berg (b. March 11, 1964, New York City) is an American director, producer, writer, and actor, known for muscular, kinetic, character-driven films — and, in the latter part of his career, for a series of gripping dramatizations of true stories in which ordinary Americans are thrust into extraordinary danger. The son of a U.S. Marine, he grew up near New York City and studied at Macalester College in Minnesota before beginning his career as an actor. Through the late 1980s and 1990s he built a solid acting résumé, most prominently as Dr. Billy Kronk on the television medical drama Chicago Hope, along with roles in films such as The Last Seduction (1994), Cop Land (1997), and later Collateral (2004).

Berg turned to directing with the dark comedy Very Bad Things (1998) and the action-comedy The Rundown (2003), then achieved a major breakthrough with the sports drama Friday Night Lights (2004), about high-school football in small-town Texas. He developed the film into the acclaimed, Emmy-nominated television series of the same name (2006–2011), cementing his reputation for authentic, hand-held, emotionally grounded storytelling. He moved into large-scale studio filmmaking with the Middle East thriller The Kingdom (2007), the hit superhero film Hancock (2008) with Will Smith, and the blockbuster Battleship (2012).

In the following decade, Berg found his most distinctive vein in fact-based dramas, forming a signature partnership with actor Mark Wahlberg.
