December 28, 1954, Mount Vernon, New York) is an American actor, director, and producer, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most respected screen actors of his generation. The son of a Pentecostal minister and a beauty-salon owner, he discovered acting while at Fordham University and trained further at the American Conservatory Theater. He first became known to a wide audience as Dr. Philip Chandler on the acclaimed medical drama St. Elsewhere (1982–1988).

Washington’s film career rose swiftly through the late 1980s. He earned an Academy Award nomination for playing anti-apartheid leader Steve Biko in Cry Freedom (1987), then won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his fierce, unforgettable performance as the defiant runaway slave Trip in Glory (1989). Through the 1990s he became a leading man of rare gravity and charisma, collaborating repeatedly with director Spike Lee — most powerfully in the title role of Malcolm X (1992), which brought another Oscar nomination — and headlining hits such as Philadelphia (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), Courage Under Fire (1996), The Hurricane (1999), and Remember the Titans (2000).
