[English] Desiree Akhavan is an American filmmaker, writer, and actress who tells queer female stories from the inside, using dark comedy to approach subjects—shame, sexuality, identity—that other filmmakers tend to handle with either solemnity or avoidance. The daughter of Iranian parents who fled their country after the 1979 revolution, Akhavan draws on the doubled outsiderness of being both Iranian-American and bisexual, and has been an outspoken advocate for queer women’s stories in an industry she argues remains uneasy with female sexuality.

Born in New York City in 1984 and raised in Rockland County, Akhavan studied at Smith College and earned a graduate degree in filmmaking at New York University. She first drew notice with the web series The Slope (2010–12), a semi-autobiographical comedy she co-created, before writing, directing, and starring in her feature debut Appropriate Behavior (2014)—a Brooklyn-set comedy about a bisexual Persian-American woman, which premiered at Sundance and led to a role on Lena Dunham’s Girls. Her second feature, The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018), a restrained drama about a teenager sent to gay conversion therapy, won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. The same year, she created, wrote, directed, and starred in the Channel 4 / Hulu series The Bisexual. In 2024, she published an essay collection, You’re Embarrassing Yourself, which won a Lambda Literary Award. Across film, television, and the page, Akhavan’s work is unified by a refusal to let difficult queer experience become either tragedy or sermon—finding, instead, the comedy in shared human imperfection.
