Based on Jessica Bruder’s 2017 nonfiction book, Nomadland follows Fern (Frances McDormand), a woman in her sixties who loses everything after the gypsum plant in Empire, Nevada, shuts down in 2011 and her husband dies. With little left to hold her in place, she sells most of her belongings, converts a van she names “Vanguard” into a home, and takes to the roads of the American West as a modern-day nomad, picking up seasonal work from Amazon warehouses to campgrounds and beet harvests. Along the way she joins a community of fellow van-dwellers — many of them real-life nomads playing versions of themselves — and learns their skills, their grief, and their quietly defiant philosophy of freedom. Neither a tale of despair nor a simple celebration, Chloé Zhao’s film is a luminous meditation on loss, dignity, and the search for meaning beyond material comfort.
