[English] Eddie Redmayne is an English actor whose gift for total physical and emotional transformation has made him one of the most acclaimed performers of his generation, equally at home in prestige biopics, blockbusters, and the stage. Born in Westminster, London, in 1982, he was educated at Eton (a classmate of Prince William) and read History of Art at Cambridge. He began on the stage, making his professional debut as Viola in an all-male Twelfth Night at Shakespeare’s Globe, and won both the Olivier and Tony Awards for John Logan’s play Red (2009–10). His film breakthrough came with My Week with Marilyn (2011) and Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables (2012). Then came the role that defined him: physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything (2014), a performance charting the progression of motor neurone disease that won him the Academy Award for Best Actor—making him the first man born in the 1980s to win an acting Oscar. He earned a second consecutive Best Actor nomination for playing transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl (2015). He then reached a global audience as Newt Scamander, the lead of the Fantastic Beasts series (2016–2022) in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. His other work includes The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), The Good Nurse (2022), a further Olivier Award for Cabaret, and the title role in the TV thriller The Day of the Jackal (2024).
