Kiki’s Delivery Service is a beloved coming-of-age fantasy from Studio Ghibli, a gentle and beautifully observed story about growing up, independence, and finding one’s place in the world. By tradition, a young witch must leave home at the age of thirteen to spend a year training on her own in an unfamiliar town. So Kiki, a bright and spirited thirteen-year-old, sets off with her wry black cat, Jiji, and — with flying on a broomstick as her only real talent — arrives in the lovely seaside city of Koriko. Taken in by the kind, pregnant baker Osono, Kiki hits upon a way to make her living: a flying delivery service. As she carries parcels across the town, she meets a cast of warm characters, including the aviation-mad boy Tombo and a solitary young painter, Ursula, and slowly builds a life of her own. But when Kiki is beset by loneliness and self-doubt, she suddenly loses her ability to fly — and must rediscover her confidence and her gift. Written, produced, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and adapted from Eiko Kadono’s children’s novel, with music by Joe Hisaishi, Kiki’s Delivery Service is a warm, timeless portrait of a young girl’s first steps into independence.

Kiki’s Delivery Service originated not as an in-house Studio Ghibli idea but as an outside proposal brought to the studio, based on Eiko Kadono’s popular children’s novel. It was Hayao Miyazaki’s first Ghibli feature adapted from another author’s work. In its early stages the project was developed with a young Sunao Katabuchi — later the acclaimed director of In This Corner of the World — set to make his directorial debut; when Miyazaki ultimately took the helm, Katabuchi remained on board as assistant director. The word takkyūbin (“home delivery”) in the title was a registered trademark of the courier company Yamato Transport, whose logo features a black cat; the company, charmed by the film’s own black cat, Jiji, came aboard as a sponsor. Backed by a large promotional campaign, the film became the biggest domestic hit of its year and a cornerstone of Ghibli’s early success.
