[English] Eminem (Marshall Bruce Mathers III, b. October 17, 1972, St. Joseph, Missouri) is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer — widely regarded as one of the greatest and best-selling hip-hop artists of all time — who is also known in film for his acclaimed starring debut in 8 Mile. Raised largely in Detroit, Michigan, he dropped out of high school and honed his skills in the city’s underground rap-battle scene, adopting the stage name “Eminem” (from his initials, M&M) and the provocative alter ego “Slim Shady.”

After a little-noticed debut, Eminem broke through with The Slim Shady LP (1999), released under the mentorship of hip-hop legend Dr. Dre. The album made him a star and a lightning rod for controversy over his provocative lyrics.
