The ten-minute standing ovation at TIFF for English Vinglish—a first-time feature in Hindi—was a recognition of the specific quality of filmmaking intelligence that created the conditions for Sridevi’s iconic performance. That Shinde has directed only two features in thirteen years is a measure of her creative seriousness, and perhaps, a reflection of the institutional difficulties the industry continues to present to women who seek to tell such specific, intimate stories.
