[English] Roger Donaldson (Roger Lindsey Donaldson, b. November 15, 1945, Ballarat, Australia) is an Australian–New Zealand director, screenwriter, and producer known for making complex, plot-driven stories accessible and taut. He emigrated to New Zealand in the 1960s, worked in advertising and photography, and became a pioneer of the country’s film industry as a co-founder of the New Zealand Film Commission. His debut feature, Sleeping Dogs (1977), is regarded as a landmark of New Zealand cinema.

His first international film was The Bounty (1984), with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, which earned a Palme d’Or nomination at Cannes. In Hollywood he built a reputation across genres: the neo-noir thriller No Way Out (1987) and the romantic drama Cocktail (1988), both leading-man vehicles; the sci-fi horror Species (1995); the disaster film Dante’s Peak (1997); and the Cuban Missile Crisis docudrama Thirteen Days (2000). He twice directed Kevin Costner (No Way Out, Thirteen Days) and Pierce Brosnan. A passion project, the Burt Munro biopic The World’s Fastest Indian (2005), and the heist thriller The Bank Job (2008) followed. In 2018 he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his contribution to film. As he has put it, he aims to make films “succinct and to the point, and not overly indulgent.”
