June 27, 1955, Gennevilliers, near Paris) is a French actress and singer, one of the most acclaimed and awarded performers in the history of French cinema, renowned for the intensity, fragility, and emotional extremity of her dramatic performances. A prodigious talent, she began acting in amateur theatre as a child and made her first film at fourteen. By seventeen she had joined the prestigious Comédie-Française, the storied French national theatre, where her gifts were immediately apparent.

Adjani became an international sensation with her performance as Adèle Hugo — the tormented, love-obsessed daughter of Victor Hugo — in François Truffaut’s The Story of Adèle H. (1975). The role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress at the age of twenty, making her the youngest Best Actress nominee at the time. She went on to work with many of the great auteurs of European cinema, including Roman Polanski (The Tenant, 1976), Walter Hill (The Driver, 1978), Werner Herzog (Nosferatu the Vampyre, 1979), and André Téchiné, and gave a legendary, physically harrowing performance in Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession (1981).
