The Lion King is Disney’s beloved animated epic, a coming-of-age story set among the animals of the African savanna and inspired in part by Shakespeare’s Hamlet. In the Pride Lands, a lion cub named Simba is born to King Mufasa (James Earl Jones) and Queen Sarabi, heir to a kingdom bound together by the “Circle of Life.” Adventurous and eager to rule, young Simba idolizes his wise and loving father — but his envious uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) covets the throne and sets in motion a terrible betrayal. When Mufasa is killed and Simba is led to believe he is to blame, the grief-stricken cub flees far from home, where he grows up in carefree exile alongside the meerkat-and-warthog duo Timon and Pumbaa, living by the motto “Hakuna Matata.” But as Scar’s tyranny lays waste to the Pride Lands, a grown Simba (Matthew Broderick) must confront his past, reclaim his identity, and decide whether to return and take his rightful place as king. The Lion King was the 32nd Disney animated feature and the first based on an entirely original story rather than an existing tale. Its plot draws on Shakespeare’s Hamlet — with a prince, a murdered father-king, and a usurping uncle — along with elements from the biblical stories of Joseph and Moses. During development the creative team traveled to Kenya’s Hell’s Gate National Park to study the landscape and observe animal movement. Initially considered a secondary project at the studio — many of Disney’s top animators chose to work on Pocahontas instead — The Lion King went on to far surpass expectations. In Japan, the film’s release was accompanied by public discussion, raised by manga artists and others, of its resemblance to Osamu Tezuka’s classic anime Jungle Emperor (Kimba the White Lion); Disney stated that its film was an original creation.
