[English] Jake Gyllenhaal (b. December 19, 1980, Los Angeles) is an American actor known for his intense, versatile, and often psychologically complex performances. Born into a film family — the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner, and younger brother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal — he began acting as a child, making his debut in City Slickers (1991). His breakthrough came with a pair of memorable roles at the turn of the millennium: the aspiring young engineer of October Sky (1999) and the troubled teenager of the enduring cult classic Donnie Darko (2001).

Gyllenhaal established himself as a major dramatic actor with his performance as Jack Twist in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain (2005), which won him the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and his first Academy Award nomination. That same year he starred as a disillusioned Marine in Sam Mendes’s Gulf War drama Jarhead (2005).
