[English] James Marsh is a British director who moves with rare fluency between documentary and drama—an artist who treats real-life stories of obsession, achievement, and endurance with the shaping instinct of a great narrative filmmaker. Born in Truro, Cornwall, in 1963 and raised partly in a working-class flat in Woolwich, London (where his father, a born-again Christian, for a time forbade him from watching films), he won a scholarship to Oxford and studied English before beginning his career directing documentaries for the BBC. His international breakthrough came with Man on Wire (2008), the story of Philippe Petit’s 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers, which Marsh structured like a heist thriller and which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film. He followed it with Project Nim (2011), about a chimpanzee raised as a human child, winning the Sundance directing award. He then proved equally assured in narrative features, above all The Theory of Everything (2014), his biopic of physicist Stephen Hawking, which earned five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and directed Eddie Redmayne to the Best Actor Oscar. His other dramas include Shadow Dancer (2012), The Mercy (2018), King of Thieves (2018), and Dance First (2023), a portrait of Samuel Beckett.
