Man on Wire is a spellbinding documentary that recounts what has been called “the artistic crime of the century.” On the morning of August 7, 1974, the young French wire-walker Philippe Petit stepped out onto a steel cable he and his accomplices had secretly rigged between the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center — then the tallest buildings in the world — and, with no safety net or harness, walked, danced, and even lay down on the wire a quarter of a mile above the streets of Manhattan for some 45 minutes, as police watched helplessly from the rooftops. Director James Marsh structures the film like a heist thriller, tracing the six years of obsessive planning, reconnaissance, and audacious subterfuge that led to the walk, and building to the event itself. Through Petit’s own charismatic testimony, interviews with his co-conspirators, remarkable archival footage, and stylish black-and-white re-enactments, the film reconstructs the caper with mounting suspense and joy. Man on Wire is based on Philippe Petit’s memoir To Reach the Clouds (2002), and its title comes from the wording of the police report filed after Petit’s arrest — the charge described simply as “man on wire.” Director James Marsh gathered Petit and his surviving collaborators to recount the plot in vivid detail, cross-cutting their testimony with the group’s own 16mm footage from the 1970s and newly shot black-and-white re-enactments in the style of a period thriller. The score draws on existing compositions by Michael Nyman, chosen at Petit’s own suggestion. Marsh made the deliberate choice never to mention the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, out of respect — a decision widely praised by critics, who felt it kept the film focused on the towers as a place of wonder.
