June 9, 1963, Owensboro, Kentucky) is an American actor and musician known for disappearing into eccentric, richly detailed characters across a remarkably eclectic career. A high-school dropout who first pursued music in rock bands, he was steered toward acting by his friend Nicolas Cage and made his film debut in the horror hit A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). He became a reluctant teen idol on the TV series 21 Jump Street (1987–1990), a status he actively sought to escape.

His path changed decisively with Edward Scissorhands (1990), in which he played the gentle, blade-handed outsider for director Tim Burton.
