Rango is a witty, visually dazzling animated Western with an unexpectedly grown-up sensibility. The title character (voiced by Johnny Depp) is a sheltered pet chameleon with a taste for theatrics and a serious identity crisis — until the day he is accidentally flung from his owner’s car and stranded in the scorching Mojave Desert. Wandering the wasteland, he stumbles into Dirt, a dusty frontier town of hardscrabble desert critters gripped by a mysterious water shortage. Reinventing himself as a swaggering gunslinger, the chameleon spins tall tales of his own heroism, and the desperate townsfolk promptly appoint him sheriff. But keeping up the act soon lands “Rango” at the center of a very real and dangerous mystery: someone is hoarding the town’s vanishing water, and unraveling the conspiracy will force this consummate fake to discover who he really is. Directed by Gore Verbinski and starring the voice of Johnny Depp — reuniting the Pirates of the Caribbean duo — Rango is a loving, sharply funny homage to classic Westerns and Hollywood itself, and a beautifully animated tale about finding your true colors.

Rango marked the first fully animated feature produced by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), George Lucas’s legendary visual-effects house. It reunited director Gore Verbinski with Johnny Depp, the pair behind the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, and was written by acclaimed screenwriter John Logan. Rather than record voices in a conventional booth, the production used a technique it called “emotion capture”: the actors performed their scenes together on set, in costume, as live-action reference, allowing the animators to capture the ensemble’s natural interplay. The film is dense with cinematic allusion — its water-conspiracy plot nods to Chinatown, and Depp’s earlier collaboration Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is referenced in a cameo — and its score was composed by frequent Verbinski collaborator Hans Zimmer.
