November 2, 1979, Palo Alto, California) is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter, known for vibrant, large-scale entertainments built around music, dance, and spectacle, and for his role in expanding Asian representation in mainstream Hollywood. The son of Chinese and Taiwanese immigrant parents who ran a beloved Silicon Valley restaurant, he often credits his family’s work ethic as the foundation of his craft. He studied at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where his early short films drew industry attention.

Chu’s first break came with the dance films Step Up 2: The Streets (2008) and Step Up 3D (2010), which established him as a director with a natural feel for movement and rhythm.
