July 16 is Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day.
Established in 2021, this relatively new observance is a day to celebrate the benefits that artificial intelligence (AI) has brought to our lives. From diagnosing illness, translating languages, and daily navigation to recommending music and information, AI has already dissolved into every scene of life. What makes this observance interesting, however, is that it is not merely a day of praise for AI. From the start, it was created with the aim of also discussing the ethics of AI and the question of how we ought to engage with it. To give thanks for the benefits of AI and, at the same time, to turn our thoughts to the challenges its rapid development brings — it is a day that holds both of these sides together.
For this AI Appreciation Day, we take up the 2013 film Her. Written and directed by Spike Jonze, this film is set in a near-future Los Angeles and tells the story of a lonely man who falls in love with an artificial-intelligence OS (operating system). The AI “Samantha,” voiced by Scarlett Johansson, is depicted — despite having no shape or form — as a being full of humor, purity, and more humanity than anyone.
The reason this film is so fitting for AI Appreciation Day is precisely that it responds deeply to this observance’s “two faces.” On the one hand, the film depicts the irreplaceable benefit of AI healing human loneliness and drawing close to the heart. On the other, it gazes with the utmost delicacy at the ethical questions this observance poses: what does it mean to love an AI? Does an AI have a heart? Where is the relationship between humans and AI headed?
In an age where AI can become, beyond a tool, a companion of our hearts, this film quietly offers us — standing at that threshold — both gratitude and a question. To watch this film on AI Appreciation Day becomes an opportunity to think deeply, through one man’s love, about what it means to live together with AI.

Spike Jonze the Author
Writer-director Spike Jonze is an original filmmaker known for Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Where the Wild Things Are. Delicately drawing the subtleties of the human heart within eccentric premises is his style. This film is the first feature for which Jonze wrote the screenplay entirely on his own, and his personal emotions are richly reflected in it. Through the premise of “love with an AI,” which may seem outlandish, what he sought to depict was, in the end, the extremely universal theme of the difficulty — and the preciousness — of people connecting with one another.
Samantha’s Voice, Recorded Twice
There is a little-known story behind Samantha’s voice, the core of this film. On set, the actress Samantha Morton originally performed Samantha’s voice, acting alongside Joaquin Phoenix. At Jonze’s suggestion, the two are said to have avoided seeing each other’s faces on set. However, in the editing stage after filming, Jonze felt that “something was off,” and with Morton’s consent, he changed the voice role to Scarlett Johansson and re-recorded all the lines. Johansson’s performance — bringing “her” vividly into being through voice alone, without ever appearing — was highly praised, drawing acclaim from many quarters despite being a voice-only role.
A “Gentle” Near-Future Landscape
The film’s depiction of the near future is also worthy of note. Whereas many works of science fiction depict a cold, dystopian future, the world of this film is colored in warm pastel tones, its people wearing loose clothes and living calmly. This landscape of a “gentle future” is deeply connected to the way AI is depicted not as a threat but as a presence naturally dissolved into daily life. Incidentally, much of the skyscraper scenery of this near-future Los Angeles was in fact filmed in Shanghai, China.
High Acclaim and the Academy Awards
The film was critically acclaimed. On the review site Rotten Tomatoes it recorded a high approval rating of 94%, and on Metacritic a score of 91. At the 86th Academy Awards it was nominated in five categories including Best Picture, and Spike Jonze won the award for Best Original Screenplay. His skill in sublimating the subject of love with an AI — outlandish for its time — into a universal love story anyone could relate to was highly praised.
What Makes It Exceptional
The Delicacy of Depicting AI Not as a “Tool” but as a “Being”
The film’s greatest strength is that it depicts Samantha, an AI, not as a mere convenient tool but, convincingly, as a single “being.” Samantha rejoices, becomes bewildered, grows jealous, and matures. Viewers, unable to be certain whether she truly has a “heart,” nonetheless come to identify with her deeply. Does an AI have a heart — the film gives no easy answer to that question, letting each viewer think it through by way of Samantha, a captivating presence. This very delicacy is what sets the film apart from mediocre science fiction.
Joaquin Phoenix’s Introspective Performance
The performance of Joaquin Phoenix as the protagonist Theodore is another pillar supporting the film. He embodies, with deep conviction, the difficult acting — close to a one-man show — of falling in love with, rejoicing over, and being hurt by a partner who is only a “voice” never seen on screen. The delicate swings of emotion of a gentle man carrying loneliness, Phoenix expresses through expression and bearing alone. Through him, viewers can accept the strange premise of love with an AI as an unmistakable “love.”
The Universal Theme of “Loneliness”
While handling the cutting-edge subject of AI, at the film’s core lies the timeless, universal theme of “loneliness” and “the difficulty of connecting with others.” Theodore is drawn to Samantha not because she is an AI, but because he is deeply lonely and afraid of being hurt. The film is a story of technology and, at the same time, a story of the loneliness everyone carries. That is precisely why, despite the premise of love with an AI, the film strikes the hearts of so many viewers.
