[English] Kevin Costner (Kevin Michael Costner, b. January 18, 1955, Lynwood, California) is an American actor and filmmaker celebrated for his portrayals of rugged individualists with a quiet, sensitive streak. After earning a business degree at California State University, Fullerton, he turned to acting and broke through as Eliot Ness in The Untouchables (1987). A run of baseball films — Bull Durham (1988) and Field of Dreams (1989) — established him as a leading man.

In 1990 he produced, directed, and starred in the western epic Dances with Wolves, which won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Costner. He followed with a remarkable early-1990s streak: the tenacious DA Jim Garrison in Oliver Stone’s JFK (1991), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), and The Bodyguard (1992) opposite Whitney Houston. After ambitious films such as Waterworld (1995) and his second directorial feature The Postman (1997), he won a Primetime Emmy for the miniseries Hatfields & McCoys (2012), and from 2018 to 2024 enjoyed a major resurgence as rancher John Dutton in the hit series Yellowstone, earning a Golden Globe. He also fronts the country-rock band Kevin Costner & Modern West.
