January 1, 1956, Isahaya, Nagasaki) is widely regarded as one of the greatest Japanese film actors of his generation and one of the finest screen performers working today. His art is defined by a profound internal stillness, extraordinary psychological depth, and a physical intelligence that conveys the most complex human emotions through the most minimal means. Across four decades he has built a body of work of immense range and international significance — from a man living under the weight of murder in The Eel to the chilling psychological register of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure. His performance as Hirayama in Perfect Days, which won him the Best Actor award at Cannes, revealed radical contentment in the textures of everyday life.

Born in Isahaya, Nagasaki, the youngest of five brothers, Yakusho graduated from Nagasaki Prefectural Omura Technical High School and moved to Tokyo, where he worked in the civil-engineering section of the Chiyoda Ward Office. Deeply moved by a stage production of The Lower Depths starring Tatsuya Nakadai, he resolved to become an actor and passed the roughly 200-to-1 audition for Nakadai’s actor-training school, Mumeijuku. It was Nakadai who gave him his stage name: “Yakusho” nods to his former career at the ward office (yakusho = government office), paired with a wish that his range of roles (yakudokoro) would grow ever broader. A member of the school’s second cohort, he married a former Mumeijuku actress in 1982.

長崎県諫早市に、5人兄弟の末っ子として生まれ、長崎県立大村工業高等学校を卒業後に上京、千代田区役所土木工事課に勤務しました。仲代達矢主演の舞台『どん底』に深く感銘を受けて俳優を志し、約200倍の難関だった仲代主宰の俳優養成所「無名塾」の試験に合格します。芸名は仲代の命名で、前職の「役所（やくしょ）」勤めにちなみつつ、演じる「役どころ」が広くなることへの祈念が込められています。無名塾は2期生。1982年に、無名塾の元女優と結婚しました。

[English] Yakusho won the Best Actor award (Prix d’interprétation masculine) at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival for Perfect Days, becoming the second Japanese man to win the honor, after Yuya Yagira in 2004. He has won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Actor five times — for Shall We Dance? (1997), The Eel (1998), 13 Assassins (2011), The Blood of Wolves (2019), and Perfect Days (2024). His other honors include the Tokyo International Film Festival Best Actor award for Cure, the Chicago International Film Festival’s Best Performance award for Under the Open Sky, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Cast as part of the ensemble of Babel. Several of his films have also won major festival prizes, including the Palme d’Or for The Eel.
