[English] Miwa Nishikawa is the most complete demonstration in contemporary Japanese cinema of a creative philosophy that refuses every convenience. Across a twenty-year career, she has consistently rejected generic formulas, borrowed materials, and the simplicity of ideological clarity. With six feature films in twenty-two years—each entirely self-written and a major award recipient—her body of work is driven by a singular, unsettling question: What do people conceal from those closest to them, and what does that concealment reveal about the conditions that necessitated it? Her seventh film, now completed, is her most historically ambitious project, directly confronting the relationship between individual survival and collective catastrophe—a theme that has remained the implicit core of her entire filmography.
