Patriots Day is a tense, respectful docudrama reconstructing the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the extraordinary manhunt that followed. On April 15, 2013 — Patriots’ Day, the Massachusetts holiday on which the marathon is run each year — Boston Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) is on duty near the finish line when two bombs detonate in the crowd, killing three people and wounding hundreds. In the chaotic aftermath, Saunders joins Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), and Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) in a desperate, round-the-clock race to identify the two suspects and track them down before they can strike again. Over the course of roughly one hundred hours, the investigation moves from the painstaking review of surveillance footage to a terrifying nighttime confrontation in the streets of Watertown. Directed by Peter Berg and led by Mark Wahlberg — their third collaboration — Patriots Day intercuts its fictionalized drama with real footage and interweaves the stories of officers, survivors, and ordinary citizens, building into a sober, gripping tribute to a city that answered terror with unity under the rallying cry “Boston Strong.”

The film’s title refers to Patriots’ Day, a holiday observed in Massachusetts and a few other states on the third Monday of April, commemorating the first battles of the American Revolutionary War; the Boston Marathon is held on that day each year. Patriots Day is based on the book Boston Strong by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, along with additional reporting, and marked the third consecutive fact-based collaboration between director Peter Berg and star Mark Wahlberg, after Lone Survivor (2013) and Deepwater Horizon (2016). While most of the film’s figures — including Commissioner Ed Davis and Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese — are based directly on real people, Wahlberg’s Sergeant Tommy Saunders is a fictional composite, created to give the sprawling, multi-strand true story a single connecting thread. The production recreated a large stretch of the marathon course at real scale and incorporated authentic news and surveillance footage. The film closes with documentary interviews with real survivors, police, and officials, and pays tribute to the victims of the attack.
