Rabbit-Proof Fence is a powerful, fact-based drama that recounts an extraordinary true story of endurance and the will to return home. In 1931, in Western Australia, government policy dictated that “half-caste” children — those of both Aboriginal and white heritage — be forcibly removed from their families and raised in institutions to be assimilated into white society, in what would come to be known as the Stolen Generations. Fourteen-year-old Molly Craig (Everlyn Sampi), her younger sister Daisy (Tianna Sansbury), and their cousin Gracie (Laura Monaghan) are seized from their mothers in the remote community of Jigalong and transported to the distant Moore River Native Settlement, on the order of A.O. Neville (Kenneth Branagh), the government’s “Chief Protector of Aborigines.” Refusing to accept their fate, the resourceful Molly leads the three girls in an escape, and together they set out on an astonishing journey home — some 1,500 miles across the harsh Australian outback — guided only by the rabbit-proof fence that runs the length of the continent, as a skilled Aboriginal tracker and the authorities pursue them. The film is based on the book Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence (1996) by Doris Pilkington Garimara, who told the true story of her mother, Molly Craig, and Molly’s sister and cousin. Director Phillip Noyce returned to his native Australia to make the film after fifteen years directing Hollywood thrillers such as Patriot Games and The Bone Collector. The three young leads — Everlyn Sampi, Tianna Sansbury, and Laura Monaghan — were all first-time actors of Aboriginal heritage, discovered through an extensive casting search. The “rabbit-proof fence” of the title refers to a real barrier erected across Western Australia in the early twentieth century to keep rabbits from farmland; running much of the length of the continent, it served the escaping girls as a guide toward home. The film closes with documentary footage of the real Molly and Daisy as elderly women, and a title card noting that the assimilation policies depicted continued in Australia until 1970.
